VP Duterte: Pilot implementation of new SHS curriculum in SY 2025-2026

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said on Tuesday that the pilot implementation of the revised curriculum for senior high school (SHS) or grades 11 to 12 will be in School Year 2025 to 2026.

“Ang target pilot natin for the senior high school curriculum is next year, next school year, so that’s School Year 2025 to 2026 pa,” said Duterte on the sidelines of the Chinese Filipino Business Club’s 13th Biennial National Convention at The Manila Hotel.

According to Duterte, the revised curriculum for SHS is still under review amid the ongoing pilot implementation of the “Matatag” curriculum.

Matatag is a revised basic education curriculum under the K-12 program that covers kindergarten up to Grade 10.

DepEd to partner with business sector

With the ongoing review of the SHS curriculum, Duterte said the Department of Education (DepEd) plans to collaborate with the business sector to gather their input on what skills should be taught to students.

“Napakahalaga noong input nila doon sa mga skills na gusto nilang makita sa mga senior high school graduates natin, sa mga K-12 graduates natin,” said Duterte.

(It is very important to get their input on the skills they want to see in our SHS and K-12 graduates.)

Duterte explained that this is based on the intent and vision of the K-12 program, which is to ensure that students may already be employed right after graduation.

“So mahalaga ‘yon na nasasabi ng market ng business community kung ano ‘yung gusto nilang makitang skills doon sa ating business graduates and of course ‘pag andoon na tayo, implement na natin, ay i-hire nila iyong mga graduates,” Duterte added.

(So it is crucial that the business community can tell what skills they want to see in our graduates, and of course, once we’re there and it’s already implemented, they will hire those graduates.)
