Landslide in Davao de Oro mining village affects 300 families

Some 300 families or 2,000 individuals were affected by the landslide in a mining village in Davao de Oro's Maco town, Civil Defense Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said on Wednesday.

MANILA, Philippines — Some 300 families or 2,000 individuals were affected by the landslide in a mining village in Davao de Oro’s Maco town, Civil Defense Administrator Ariel Nepomuceno said on Wednesday.

Nepomuceno said the government already provided P190-million worth of assistance to the affected families.

“We, at the national level, are always ready to extend additional support to the affected areas,” Nepomuceno said in a statement.

As of 2:00 p.m., six miners were killed while 46 people remain missing after several buses carrying 86 workers of Apex Mines were buried in a landslide at around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Barangay Masara, according to the Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom).

The landslide in the mining village was caused by multiple weather disturbances which has caused widespread flooding, landslide incidents, and damage to infrastructures in the region, according to Nepomuceno.
