Corona to testify if Ombudsman will also face Senate over $10M deposits–defense
MANILA, Philippines – Chief Justice Renato Corona will testify in his own impeachment trial if Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales will also face the Senate in connection with the alleged $10 million bank deposits that the Chief Justice allegedly owned.
“We will present the Chief Justice…definitely,” said Corona’s defense counsel Jose Roy III during Tuesday’s impeachment trial in the Senate.
Roy gave this assurance when asked by Senate President and presiding officer Juan Ponce-Enrile if Corona would testify in the trial if the Senate would subpoena the Ombudsman and other persons who filed a case against Corona involving the $10 million deposit.
Aside from the Ombudsman, the defense team also sought the appearance of Congressman Walden Bello, former Akbayan Partylist Representative Risa Hontiveros and other petitioners in the case filed against Corona before the Office of the Ombudsman.
