The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) has added “content creation” to its list of courses that vocational training centers can adopt and offer, in response to the emergence of online platforms as a lucrative source of income.
Tesda Secretary Suharto Mangudadatu said the agency had come up with competency standards on content creation for social media that institutions could use for their training programs.
“Virtual networks and communities have enabled us to connect with our audience, build brand awareness and strengthen engagement. However, the effectiveness of our efforts relies heavily on the quality and relevance of the content we share,” Mangudadatu said in a statement on Friday.
Livelihood opportunities“In light of this, our content creators must be well-equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to produce compelling and engaging content,” he added.
Offering content creation as a course in vocational education institutions creates “livelihood opportunities … in the comfort of their own homes,” Mangudadatu said.
Competency standards
The competency standards, which gauge an “acceptable work performance” by skilled workers, were crafted in collaboration with the Kapisanan ng Social Media Broadcasters ng Pilipinas Inc., according to the agency.
Summing up the 57-page competency standards for the course, Tesda said students taking up content creation would be evaluated based on these main core competencies: “creating concepts for social media posting, translating concepts into multimedia content and propagating content.”
The students are expected to follow the “latest social media trends and related facts,” and learn how to write content for social media. The course also covers equipment preparation, recording and streaming of content, and editing of photo, video and audio.
For propagation of content, marketing and community management must be taught to the students.
“Basic competencies,” on the other hand, include working in a diverse environment; applying critical thinking and problem-solving techniques; using information “systematically;” and facilitating entrepreneurial skills for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Six-digit earnings
Based on current industry estimates, content creators with a massive following could rake in P100,000 to P150,000 for a single social media post.
Those with less than a million followers receive between P50,000 and P80,000, while content creators with a smaller reach get paid between P25,000 and P40,000.
