MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was urged by none other than his older sister, Senator Imee Marcos, to clear things in relation to the International Criminal Court.
While the Chief Executive already stated his administration would not cooperate with ICC in any of its investigations on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, the senator said it is important that every agency must make the same stand.
“Let’s have the Department of Justice and all their employees, undersecretaries echo the President’s message, that there should be an end to this. This should be clear,” the senator said in an interview over ANC’s Headstart on Thursday.
“Government can’t go rogue, and everyone is just saying different things,” she observed.
In July 2023, ICC rejected Philippine government’s appeal to stop its investigation into Duterte’s bloody anti-drug campaign.
However, President Marcos repeatedly clarified he does not recognize the jurisdiction of ICC in the Philippines as he believes this is a “threat” to the country’s sovereignty.
ICC talks have resurfaced following former Senator Antonio Trillanes’ exposé that ICC investigators have allegedly gathered sufficient evidence against Duterte.
Trillanes had said a warrant of arrest against Duterte may be issued “very soon.”
