MANILA, Philippines — Some parts of the country will continue to experience cold weather on Tuesday due to the effects of the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In a public report, Pagasa specialist Grace Castañeda said the weather system will bring cool weather and chances of light rains in Luzon and Visayas.

According to Pagasa’s 4 a.m. advisory, temperatures in Baguio may drop to as low as 12 degrees Celsius; Metro Manila, 19 degrees Celsius; Laoag City, 19 degrees Celsius; and Tuguegarao City, 20 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

In Visayas, Iloilo City and Tacloban City may experience temperatures at 23 degrees Celsius while Metro Cebu may have it at 25 degrees Celsius, it added.

Pagasa previously said that the coldest temperature recorded since the onset of the amihan season in October was detected in La Trinidad, Benguet, where temperatures dipped to 9.7 degrees Celsius.

Other than a drop in temperature, the northeast monsoon will also bring chances of light rains in Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, and Bicol Region, and Eastern Visayas on Tuesday, Pagasa’s advisory indicated.

The same weather system will likewise cause partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, it added.

Regarding the trough or extension of the low-pressure area (LPA) monitored south of Mindanao and outside of the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), the state weather agency said it is seen to trigger rains in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Caraga, Davao Region, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, and Southern Leyte may experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA, Pagasa further said.

This LPA, however, is unlikely to intensify into a cyclone or enter the PAR, Castañeda noted in her report.

As for the country’s coasts, gale warnings were hoisted over the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon and eastern seaboards of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, where waves are anticipated to reach as high as 4.5 meters on Tuesday.
