Manila LGU collected 48 tons of garbage after Bagong Pilipinas rally

MANILA, Philippines — A day after the kick-off rally of the “Bagong Pilipinas” movement at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila, authorities have collected 48 tons of garbage within the area, according to the local government unit (LGU) of Manila.

The report Manila City spokesperson Princess Abante sent to INQURIER.net said that the city’s Department of Public Service (DPS) collected all litter from January 28 to 29.

The data showed three trucks were used to collect 29 tons of garbage hours after the event on Sunday, while the remaining nine tons were gathered by one truck on Monday morning.

During the event, two helicopters briefly passed through the area and dropped thousands of confetti on the crowd, while other attendees were seen leaving their plastic water bottles within the area despite continuous calls from environmental groups to keep the event litter-free.

Last January 9, the EcoWaste Coalition lamented the carpet of trash left by devotees who attended the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Among the garbage it found were single-use plastic bags, bottles, and cups, polystyrene food containers, paper food packaging, food waste, cigarette butts, and disposable vapes.
