Classes, work suspended in some Albay areas due to incessant rains

LEGAZPI CITY — Classes in some universities and work in some offices were suspended on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 25, due to continuous rains in Albay.

In an advisory, Nene Merioles, schools division superintendent of the Department of Education in Albay, said the suspension of work covers offices under the division, except those involved in on-going activities.

Classes in preschool, elementary, and high schools were suspended at the Divine Word College of Legazpi and the University of Sto. Thomas Legazpi.

In a memorandum, Baby Boy Benjamin Nebres III, president of Bicol University, also ordered the suspension of classes at all levels on all campuses in Albay and Sorsogon.

At 10:30 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon issued an orange rainfall warning in Albay and Sorsogon and warned of possible flooding near the river channels and landslides in high-risk areas.

Pagasa said moderate to heavy rains were affecting portions of Northern Samar, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Masbate.

Mayor Carlwyn Baldo of Daraga town in Albay also issued a lahar and landslide warning and advised village officials to actively monitor the river channels, including areas connected to the Mi-isi gully of Mayon Volcano.

Officials in the villages of Mi-isi, Matnog, Banadero, and Kimantong were alerted to ensure safety. INQ
