Aquino made his decision known on May 1, Labor Day, saying that the P125 across-the-board wage increase would cost the economy P1.43 trillion annually.
He said the economy was only worth P8 to P9 trillion and a wage increase of this scale would lead to higher prices of goods and services.
Aquino came up with the figure by multiplying P125 by 22 working days in a month, then by 13months in a year(taking into consideration the mandatory annual 13th month pay) and by 40 million which is the number of Filipino employees.
Aquino, however, promised instead a P11.2 billion educational assistance and P1.1 billion skills upgrade for government employees.
