UN rapporteur on freedom of expression arrives in PH

MANILA, Philippines — Irene Khan, the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, arrived in Manila on Monday, one day ahead of schedule. 

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) welcomed Khan, who arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Kuala Lumpur.

The PTFoMS called Khan’s visit “an opportunity to highlight the Philippines’ unwavering dedication to openness, transparency, and a thriving media landscape where everyone is empowered to freely express their opinions.”

Khan will be in the country until February 2.

According to the PTFoMS, Khan can meet with state institutions and government bodies of her choosing. 

“The visit is a welcome opportunity to showcase the nation’s commitment to openness, transparency and its vibrant media community highlighted by everyone’s right to freely express their opinion,” PTFoMS Executive Director Paul Gutierrez said in a previous statement.
