‘Wala pang sign’: Abby Binay to decide by March if she’ll run for office in 2025

MANILA, Philippines — Makati Mayor Abby Binay has given herself until March this year to decide whether she will pursue other political paths or run in the 2025 elections as mayor of Taguig City, where ten barangays previously under Makati’s second district were transferred.

Binay said that she is still waiting for a “sign,” as she considered herself “lucky” for having a lot of options.

“Wala pa ring sign, wala pa eh, I’m giving myself until March, I have to decide by then. Kaya sinasabi ko palagi na ako siguro maswerte kasi marami akong options eh,” Binay told reporters in an ambush interview.

(I’m still waiting for a sign and giving myself until March before I decide. I always consider myself lucky because I have many options.)

“I can go national, I can run for Congress, I can run for the Senate, I can run for mayor, I can decide not to run diba, I can become a full time wife, I can study. So maswerte ako na may ganung options, kaya medyo mahirap mamili kung ano yung magiging o yung tatahakin nating landas,” she added.

(So I’m lucky because I have a range of options, making it hard to decide what to do next.)

Even in November last year, Binay said that running as the local chief executive of Taguig is an option for her.

Reports revealed that the Supreme Court (SC) third division denied the Makati City government’s request to file a second motion for reconsideration regarding its territorial dispute with Taguig in a resolution dated June 26, 2023.

Before this, the SC rejected Makati City’s Omnibus motion, seeking to reconsider its ruling in 2021 and requesting that the case be elevated to its en banc.

The ruling declared that Taguig owns Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation, where Bonifacio Global City is situated, and ordered Makati’s city government to stop exercising its authority within the area.

Among the areas included in the court’s decision are Barangays Pembo, Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, West Rembo, East Rembo, Pitogo, Philippine Army headquarters, Navy installation, Marines’ headquarters, Consular area, Joint United States Military Assistance Group area, Heritage Park, Libingan ng mga Bayani, Armed Forces of the Philippines Officers Village and six other villages near it.
