Mandaue to train brgy leaders on solid waste mgmt

Mandaue City barangay officials will be given a three-day seminar on solid waste management in San Francisco, Camotes island on May 14- 16 this year.

The seminar which will also be attended by Mayor Jonas Cortes aims to address the solid waste problem in the 27 barangays of the city. The seminar is supported by Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.(Rafi).

The city’s move to address the solid waste management is part of its drive to make Mandaue a prime business destination in Central Viasayas in 2016.

In line with this, the city has passed rigorous and tedious process of qualifying for the Performance Government System initiated by the International Solidarity in Asia.

Under the vision, Mandaue City government wants that the environment will be taken cared of and the bulk of work lies in the barangay level.

At present there are only four barangays in the city who have set-up their functional Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and these are barangays Canduman, Pagsabungan, Ibabao and Bakilid.

Other barangays have set up their own MRF but are not yet functional, while some haven’t started yet.

Waste segregation and the establishment of MRFs is mandated in the Solid Waste Management Act 2000 (RA 9003). /Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza
