LORENZO “Thunderbolt” Villanueva of North Cotabato showcased his awesome punching power but lost via a second-round knockout to Daud Cino Yordan of Indonesia last Saturday night at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
The fight was a companion main event of the fight between WBA and Ring Magazine featherweight champion Chris John of Indonesia and Japanese challenger Shoji Kimura.
John successfully defend his title for the 15th time in eight years after beating Kimura. The judges scorecards read 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109.
Villanueva, meanwhile, suffered his first career loss. He entered this fight with a record of 22 wins with 21 knockouts.
The 23-year-old Yordan won the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) featherweight title and improved his record to 29-2 (win-loss) with 23 knockouts.
Villanueva came out strong as he downed Yordan in the first round. The Indonesian looked hurt but managed to survive Villanueva’s wild swings. /correspondent Rene Bonsubre Jr.
