BI nabs South Korean for telecoms fraud, being undesirable alien

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Wednesday that it has arrested a South Korean man who is wanted for involvement in telecommunications fraud.

According to the BI, Lee Seunggon, 35 years old, was arrested in the Clark International Airport on Monday. Lee attempted to board a flight bound for Incheon, South Korea.

Authorities flagged him down after they detected that his name had a hit in the BI’s database of aliens with derogatory records. Apart from his record in South Korea, Lee is also wanted in the Philippines for being an undesirable alien.

South Korean authorities said that between March 2021 to May 2021, Lee was a member of a group that engaged in phishing calls, introducing themselves as money lenders.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said that Lee will be deported as soon as all documents have been filed, and he has been included in the BI’s blacklist should he attempt to return to the country.

“We will thus deport him as soon as we have secured the necessary clearances for his departure.  He was already included in our blacklist to prevent him from reentering the country,” Tansingco said.

Lee will be detained at the BI facility in Taguig City while undergoing deportation proceedings.
