MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said he hoped that Indonesia’s next head of state would continue close relations with the Philippines.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo‘s term is ending as Indonesia is set to hold its national elections in February.

“As you conclude your term as president of the Republic of Indonesia in these coming months, I am optimistic that your successor will keep the momentum of positive trajectory in both our bilateral and regional partnership,” said Marcos, who welcomed Widodo at Malacañang for a state banquet.

“I have, however, warned His Excellency that even after his time as president, I will still be knocking at his door to ask for assistance whenever I feel the need,” added Marcos.

Marcos lauded Widodo’s leadership as well as his chairmanship of the 2023 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit.

With the Philippines set to host the 2026 Asean Summit, Marcos said he hoped the Philippines would succeed similarly.

“I furthermore would like to congratulate Indonesia for the successful hosting and excellent arrangements as Chairman last year. We hope to emulate your success once we assume the Asean Chair in 2026,” said Marcos.

The Philippines took over the Chairmanship from Myanmar as the country grappled with internal violence after its democratically elected government was overthrown by a military junta.
