MANILA, Philippines—Prices of vegetables soared because of the typhoons that struck the country over the past weeks, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala told 990AM in an interview Tuesday.
“Prices of vegetables went up because of the flood brought about by the recent typhoons. Rice and corn crops in Mindanao were affected, and so were the vegetables in Bukidnon and Zambales,” Alcala said, adding that in a week or two, prices could go back to normal.
Alcala said that the Department of Agriculture has been giving out bags of certified seeds as “pamalit-tanim” to those affected by flood. “We have given about 8,000 bags of certified seeds in Mindanao.”
He also said without elaborating that they were planning to add more mechanical dryers so that farmers would have something to use during the wet season.
