Japan quake death toll reaches 62

The death toll in the powerful quake that hit Japan on New Year’s day rises to 62.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck the Noto peninsula on Monday afternoon, leveling houses and cutting off remote areas from much-needed aid.

Five dead in Japan plane collision at Tokyo airport; probe underway

Five people aboard a Japan coast guard aircraft died when it hit a Japan Airlines passenger plane on the ground in a collision at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport on Tuesday.

People familiar with the investigation said the Japan Safety Transport Board (JTSB) would lead the probe with participation from agencies in France, where the airplane was built, and Britain, where its two Rolls-Royce engines were manufactured.
