Japan in ‘battle against time’ to rescue New Year’s Day quake survivors
Japan is struggling to asses the extent of damage from a massive earthquake that struck its west coast on New Year’s day.
The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck in the middle of the afternoon on Monday, prompting residents in some coastal areas to flee to higher ground as tsunami waves about 1 meter (3.3 ft) hit Japan’s western seaboard.

The Philippine Ambassador to Japan says no Filipino has been killed or hurt following the major earthquake that hit Japan on New Year’s day.
Citing reports from Filipino community leaders, Albano said Japan-based Filipinos are safe, adding that some have already evacuated.
Traslacion 2024: PNP to deploy over 13,000 cops
The Philippine National Police plans to dispatch more than 13,000 personnel and officers for the Traslacion or the Feast of the Black Nazarene this month.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said they are already coordinating with Manila Police District director Col. Arnold Thomas Ibay and anticipating an estimated 2.5 million locals and devotees who will attend the event.
