MANILA, Philippines — Senator Imee Marcos has urged Department of Transportation (DOTr) to revoke the “deadly deadlines” on PUV modernization program.
In a statement on Thursday, Marcos said “exhaustive meetings” and “consultations” with operators, drivers, and commuters are needed prior to the implemention of the scheme.
“Who doesn’t want a new vehicle? But with the high cost of living, how many can afford one?” asked Marcos.
“And why should thousands of operators and drivers be forced to become members of transport cooperatives?” the senator inquired.
“Having been owners and small entrepreneurs, will they become mere employees in a coop?” she wondered.
“Complex as these issues are, we would do well to listen to the grievances of PUV operators, drivers, and commuters,” she said.
“Above all, the Land Transportation Office and DOTr should quit threatening them with deadlines, suspensions, and franchise revocations,” she told government transport officials.
A two-week transport strike against the program is being held by groups Piston and Manibela.
The protest will end on Friday, December 29.
DOTr had maintained the deadline for the application of franchise consolidation for PUVs is on Sunday, December 31.
