MANILA, Philippines — Department of Health (DOH) tells the public that should anyone accidentally swallow a watusi, the person is advised to refrain from inducing himself/herself to vomit the firework.
The reminder comes on Thursday, after a four-year-old boy from Calabarzon accidentally swallowed watusi inside their home.
According to the department, individuals who ingested the poisonous illegal firecracker by mistake must consume eggs and be brought to the nearest hospital.
“If swallowed: Do not induce vomiting,” DOH said in an advisory.
“Children may be given 6-8 raw egg whites; for adults, 8-12 raw egg whites,” it recommended.
“Bring the patient immediately to the nearest hospital emergency room,” it further said.
If watusi gets in the eye, the person must immediately wash his or her eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes, keep eyelids open, and seek medical attention.

“If skin is affected: Immediately wash affected areas with plenty of clean water,” DOH said.
“Remove contaminated clothing (make sure it is washed before re-use). Seek medical attention,” it also requested.
“If inhaled: Let the patient breathe in clean and fresh air; keep him/her comfortable. Seek urgent medical assistance,” it suggested.
DOH stressed watusi is deadly and is often mistaken by children for candy due to its size and color.
It contains yellow phosphorus, potassium chlorate, potassium nitrate, and trinitrotoluene, the department said.
“Ingestion will lead to death,” DOH warned.
“Bring the patient to the emergency room ASAP,” the department ordered.
“Do not buy or allow any Watusi to be at your home,” DOH asked the public.
