BI stops Filipinos bound for Holy Land over fake pilgrimage illegal recruitment solicitations

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration has apprehended a man on Sunday who attempted to leave for Macau through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to visit his “fake” wife.

According to the BI, the man claimed to visit his “wife” who was an overseas Filipino worker in Macau, but presented a counterfeit marriage certificate.

The man then admitted that he bought the counterfeit document through Facebook for P1,500.

The agency did not disclose the name of the man in accordance with anti-trafficking laws.

According to BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco, they are suspecting that the man may be illegally recruited to work abroad.

“We suspect he might be traveling after being illegally recruited to work abroad, hence the story and the fake document,” Tansingco said.

The BI added that the man was brought to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for assistance and investigation.
