MANILA, Philippines — A technical problem temporarily disrupted Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) operations on Tuesday morning, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

Smoke emanating from a train at Cubao Station-Southbound caused the disruption.

MRT-3 stopped operations, unloaded its passengers, and moved the faulty train to Shaw pocket track at 5:52 a.m.

“All [450] passengers transferred to the replacement Train at Cubao Station at 5:54 a.m.,” the DOTr said, adding that MRT-3 was able to resume its operations at 6:06 a.m., or eight minutes after the incident.

MRT-3 operations have once again halted because of technical issues, making a recurring problem for the transport system.

Last May, an a door malfunction on an MRT-3 train led to a brief service interruption.

Its management said one of its trains encountered a “start-up interlocking error” while en route to Ortigas Station-Southbound. It also explained that the malfunction arises “when a train door could only partially close.”

“For [the] safety of all passengers, the train was temporarily halted until [the] error was resolved by on-board technicians,” it said seven months ago.

In August, the MRT-3 management said it may not be able to implement a 24-hour operation anytime soon because of the required nightly maintenance checks.
