Over 3,400 aftershocks logged after Magnitude 6.8 quake in Surigao del Sur

Just weeks after being hit by strong earthquakes, Surigao del Sur is bracing for the coming of 'Kabayan,' whose rains and winds have started to batter the province on Sunday.

MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists have recorded more than 3,400 earthquakes as of Monday, three weeks after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off Cagwait, Surigao del Sur.

A total of 3,434 aftershocks were logged, with only 10 being felt, ranging from magnitude 1.3 to 5.8.

The tectonic magnitude 6.8 tremor occurred on Dec. 4, with a shallow depth of focus of one kilometer, according to Phivolcs.

It was triggered by the Philippine Trench, similar to the powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake off Hinatuan town in the same province on Dec. 2.
