No ‘significant’ untoward incident this Christmas so far — PNP

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported no “significant” untoward incident during the celebration of Christmas Day nationwide, its spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said on Monday.

“Generally peaceful nationwide,” Fajardo told reporters in a Viber message. “No significant untoward incident recorded.”

However, on Christmas Eve, two people were killed while three were injured when a man drove a military truck into shoppers at a Davao City market, which authorities deem to be an “isolated incident.”

For his part, PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda said the police will not allow the “actions of a few” to ruin the yuletide festivities.

“To the Filipino people, may the selfless service of the men and women in uniform provide you with a sense of security, allowing you to fully enjoy the holiday season. Rest assured that we will not let the actions of a few ruin the festivities,” Acorda said in a statement on Monday.

Acorda also said that the cops nationwide are committed to service even in holidays.

The PNP enforced a “no-leave, no-break” policy for its personnel starting Dec. 15 as it deployed 39,000 policemen nationwide for the holidays.

“We are committed to being of service not only during the holidays but throughout the year. Together, let us stand strong and united against any challenges that come our way,” Acorda said.
