Amid numerous parties during the holidays, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) appealed to motorists not to get drunk to ensure their own safety as they drive back home to their families and loved ones.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said that aside from the possibility that they get caught by enforcers for violating the Republic Act No. 10586, or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013, it would be more terrifying if they figured in a road accident, which would put not only their lives and limbs at risk, but also of other people on the road.
“If one cannot resist the temptation to get drunk, just make sure that there will be one sober person to drive you home, or better yet, just commute or get a cab to get home,” Mendoza said in a statement.
Under RA 10586, a driver found under the influence of alcohol faces three months imprisonment, and a fine ranging from P20,000 to P80,000. —Dexter Cabalza
