MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila’s weekly COVID-19 positivity jumped to 21 percent as of December 17 from the previous week’s 13.4 percent, Octa Research fellow Guido David said on Tuesday.

According to David, this is only the fifth instance the positivity rate in the capital region has surpassed the 20 percent mark since 2020.

“This is only the 5th time since 2020 that the positivity rate exceeded 20 percent,” David said through data posted on Twitter.

David noted that while most cases exhibited mild symptoms, hospital occupancy in the region increased.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate nationwide also increased to 15.8 percent as of December 18 from the previous week’s 11 percent, said David.

On Monday, the Department of Health (DOH) said it recorded 2,725 new COVID-19 cases from December 12 to 18, 50 percent higher than the 1,821 infections recorded the week before.

As of December 18, based on the DOH’s online COVID-19 tracker, the total COVID-19 caseload in the country sits at 4,130,311, with recoveries at 4,058,736, active cases at 4,780 and deaths at 66,795.
