Just weeks after being hit by strong earthquakes, Surigao del Sur is bracing for the coming of 'Kabayan,' whose rains and winds have started to batter the province on Sunday.

ILIGAN CITY — A light earthquake struck off Cagwait town in Surigao del Sur on Monday morning.

State geologists said the magnitude 4.4 tremor occurred at 4:33 a.m. 94 kilometers northeast of Cagwait.

The offshore quake had a depth of one kilometer but no damage and aftershocks were expected.

The quake came as people were bracing for the onslaught of ‘Kabayan’ that has developed into a storm from being a tropical depression.

As of 7 a.m., the state weather bureau estimated the storm to be over the waters of northeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 65 kms per hour and gustiness of up to 80 kms per hour.
