Romualdez cites PH’s firm commitment to Asean-Japan ties

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s  presence in the 50th Commemorative Asean-Japan Friendship and Cooperation Summit is a “powerful symbol” of the Philippines’ commitment to the relationship between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and Japan, Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said on Saturday.

“President Marcos’s presence at this landmark event is a powerful symbol of the Philippines’ unwavering commitment to strengthening its ties with Japan and further elevating our collective partnership within the ASEAN bloc,” Romualdez said in a statement.

“This golden anniversary presents a unique opportunity to not only celebrate past achievements but also chart a brighter, more prosperous future for our region,” he added.

Romualdez expressed optimism that the President will play a key role in advancing discussions on key regional issues, including the enhanced Japan-Philippines economic cooperation.

According to Romualdez, Marcos’ focus on infrastructure development, renewable energy, and digital transformation aligns perfectly with Japan’s expertise and its strategic investments in Southeast Asia. 

Romualdez also said the summit is an opportunity to promote enhanced maritime and security cooperation between the Philippines and Japan.

He emphasized that it is likewise a chance to foster regional stability and address the maritime challenges the country is facing in its West Philippine Sea.

The summit, Romualdez said, likewise presents a platform to strengthen cultural exchange and people-to-people linkages between the region and Japan.

“Our shared history, cultural ties, and common aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous region form a strong foundation for this partnership,” he said,

Romualdez is part of Marcos’ official delegation in the summit, which is slated until Dec. 18.
