MANILA, Philippines — Hot and humid weather may prevail over most of the country on Sunday because the northeast monsoon is “almost weak,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In a morning public report, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina said the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, is currently barely affecting any part of the archipelago.

“Ang umiiral po sa atin ngayon ay ‘yung easterlies, halos humina rin kasi itong amihan kaya hindi ito halos nakakaapekto sa ano mang bahagi ng ating bansa. Asahan natin sa araw na ito mainit at maalinsangang panahon ang mararanasan dito sa malaking bahagi ng ating kapuluan,” he explained.

(What we have now is the easterlies, because the northeast monsoon has almost weakened and it is hardly affecting any part of our country. Let’s expect hot and humid weather to be experienced here in a large part of our archipelago.)

Easterlies are the warm winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean, causing sultry weather.

Badrina, however, noted that brief rain showers and thunderstorms may also occur in some parts of the country.

“Bagamat may easterlies tayo possible pa rin ‘yung mga passing rain showers and thunderstorms sa ilang bahagi ng ating bansa pero hindi natin inaasahan na magiging matagal o magiging malakas,” he said.

(Although we have easterlies, passing rain showers and thunderstorms are still possible in some parts of our country, but we do not expect them to be long or strong.)

Still, Pagasa warned affected residents to be alert against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Badrina further said that the state weather bureau is not monitoring any low pressure area within or outside of the Philippine area of responsibility, and that no gale alert is raised over the country’s seaboards for Sunday, December 10.
