Phivolcs reports over 3,300 aftershocks from 7.4 quake in Surigao del Sur

Phivolcs monitors 2,491 aftershocks in Surigao del Sur after strong quake earthquake mindoro big one

MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists so far monitored over 3,300 aftershocks on Thursday following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit waters off Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur last December 2.

The figure is about 300 higher than the 2,959 aftershocks logged from the day before, based on the data of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to its 6 a.m. update, the agency recorded a total of 3,302 aftershocks with a strength of about 1.3 to 6.6 magnitude.

Of the 3,302, only 38 were felt, Phivolcs added.

Earlier, the agency reported that the earthquake hit near Hinatuan on Saturday evening, which has so far killed three people and injured 48 others.

In response, the municipal government of Hinatuan placed the area under a state of calamity last December 4.
