MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday said it has already confirmed four cases of Mycoplasma pneumonia infection in the country.
The said infections were recorded among cases of influenza-like illness (ILI), the DOH pointed out.
Mycoplasma pneumonia is a bacteria that causes an influenza-like illness called “walking pneumonia.”
“As of November 25, 2023, there are a total of four confirmed cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection among reported ILI cases,” the DOH said.
“Note that the existing surveillance is among ILI cases only,” it added.
The DOH explained that globally, “walking pneumonia” is not a notifiable disease, adding that it is not a new pathogen, and has already been previously detected among local cases.
“So far, the only country that has recorded incidents of Mycoplasma pneumonia is China,” said the DOH.
Meanwhile, the DOH noted that the increase in ILI cases have started to decline, but warned that it is expected to rise again by the start of January.
Hence, the DOH encouraged the public to “perform individual self assessment” and utilize ways to protect themselves through the wearing of face masks, ensuring adequate ventilation, isolating when sick, as well as getting vaccinated and boosted to provide additional protection against infection or severe disease.
