2 consecutive quakes hit South Cotabato -- Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes, a minute apart, were recorded in T’boli, South Cotabato on Thursday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The first earthquake Phivolcs reported was at magnitude 2.5. It was felt at 1:31 p.m.

The agency said the first quake was tectonic in origin and had a two-kilometer depth of focus.

Intensity III was felt in T’boli, South Cotabato.

Meanwhile, the second earthquake was felt in the area at 1:32 p.m. It was on magnitude 3.5.

Phivolcs said the shaking was also tectonic in origin and had an eight-kilometer depth of focus.

Instrumental Intensity III and Intensity III were likewise recorded in the temblor’s location, T’boli, South Cotabato.

The intensity is based on the ground motion felt by people in the affected area, while instrumental intensity is the quake’s strength measured by an intensity meter or scale.

Phivolcs noted that both earthquakes are not expected to cause damage or aftershocks.
