Phivolcs: No tsunami alert raised after 6.6 magnitude quake in Papua New Guinea

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday ruled out any tsunami threat to the Philippines after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake that shook Papua New Guinea.

In an advisory, the state seismologist said the temblor occurred at 5:47 a.m. near the north of Papua New Guinea.

It had a depth of focus of 44 kilometers.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said.

“This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it added.

Phivolcs said there are no recommended actions after the tremor.
