LUCENA CITY — The cities of Cabuyao and Calamba in Laguna province have ordered the resumption of in-person classes after the public transportation strike failed in their localities.

The two local governments announced on their Facebook pages that classes at all levels in public and private schools in their respective localities would resume on Thursday, Nov. 23.

Calamba Mayor Roseller Rizal announced that commuters could avail themselves of the free transportation provided by the local government.

On Wednesday, authorities in the two cities suspended in-person classes due to the three-day nationwide transportation strike launched by Manibela.

However, the local governments in the cities of San Pedro, Santa Rosa, and Biñan, also in Laguna, did not suspend classes in their respective localities.

On Monday, the five cities suspended in-person classes at all levels after the transport group Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide (Piston) initiated a three-day strike nationwide to protest the Dec. 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional public utility jeepneys.

However, Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista stood firm not to scrap the franchise consolidation requirement.

Though he expressed willingness to discuss the other demands of transport groups.
