MANILA, Philippines — Despite the ongoing transport strike entering its second day, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) declared that the number coding scheme would resume on Tuesday.

In an advisory on Monday, the MMDA said that the number coding scheme will resume from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 a.m.

“Under the scheme, vehicles are not allowed to travel on the main streets of Metro Manila based on the last digit of the license plates during the said coding hours,” said MMDA.

The MMDA resumed the number coding scheme after suspending it on Monday due to the scheduled three-day transport strike by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide in protest of the December 31 deadline for the consolidation of traditional public utility jeepneys.

But in its assessment, the MMDA said that the strike failed to paralyze the transportation system in Metro Manila.

MMDA acting chair Don Artes also noted that while suspending the number coding scheme in Metro Manila helped ease the anticipated impact of the transport strike, it resulted in a heavier traffic flow.
