Hong Kong cargo ship finds, rescues missing fisherman in Pangasinan

A general cargo ship has found one of the two fishermen who went missing off the coast of Agno, Pangasinan.

MANILA, Philippines – A general cargo ship has found one of the two fishermen who went missing off the coast of Agno, Pangasinan.

MV Deryoung Space, a cargo ship registered under the flag of Hong Kong, found and rescued the fisherman while it was enroute to Subic, Zambales.

ADMIRAL GAVAN COMMENDS FILIPINO SEAFARERS WHO RESCUED MISSING FISHERMAN IN PANGASINANPhilippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L Gavan, has commended the Filipino master, officers, and crew of MV DERYOUNG SPACE who found and rescued one of the two missing Filipino fishermen in the vicinity waters off Agno, Pangasinan, at around 2:20PM yesterday, 18 November 2023. The said general cargo vessel, registered under the flag of Hong Kong, was underway to Subic, Zambales when the rescue operation occurred. "I recognize the exemplary professionalism and commend the humanitarian act of the master, officers and crew of MV DERYOUNG SPACE. In the Philippine waters, our seafarers are indeed our everyday heroes," CG Admiral Gavan expressed. Based on the investigation, two Filipino fishermen went on a fishing activity on 17 November 2023. They failed to return at midnight due to bad weather conditions, causing their motorbanca to submerge. After receiving the report from the family, the PCG immediately informed transiting vessels regarding the incident for possible sightings. The following day, the PCG received an update from MV DERYOUNG SPACE, communicating they found and rescued one of the two missing Filipino fishermen.As of press time, the general cargo vessel safely arrived at the Subic Port. The rescued Filipino fisherman was warmly welcomed by his family, PCG personnel, and Agno local government unit (LGU) officials. Meanwhile, the search and rescue (SAR) team continues to look for the other missing Filipino fisherman from Agno, Pangasinan. In response to their heroic feat, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant CG Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan on Sunday commended the ship’s Filipino master, officers, and crew.

“I recognize the exemplary professionalism and commend the humanitarian act of the master, officers and crew of MV Deryoung Space. In the Philippine waters, our seafarers are indeed our everyday heroes,” CG Admiral Gavan said.

PCG said that the general cargo vessel has arrived at the Subic Port, where the rescued fisherman was welcomed by his family.

Investigations found that the two Filipino fishermen went missing on Friday, November 17, after failing to return due to bad weather conditions.

At present, the PCG said that a search and rescue team is still looking for the other missing fisherman.
