DOST inks deal with AI-powered meteorology firm

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Thursday signed an agreement with artificial intelligence (AI) meteorology company ATMO Inc. to build a “high-resolution weather forecasting system” in the country.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding was witnessed by President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on the sidelines of the 2023 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in San Francisco, California.

“ATMO and the DOST’s partnership on an AI-powered weather forecasting system will help the Philippines build its climate resilience,” Marcos said.

The contract was signed by DOST Undersecretary Maridon Sahagun and ATMO Inc. founder and Chief Executive Officer Alexander Levy.

According to Marcos, the partnership is a manifestation of the “unwavering commitment” of the United States and the Philippines in terms of collaboration, innovation, and progress.

“What we have witnessed today will bring us closer to our vision of a more prosperous and sustainable Philippines,” said Marcos.

He then assured both private and public partners in the country and in the US of the Philippine government’s commitment to provide necessary resources to ensure the success of the partnership.
