A video taken by Kyle Ellivera, listed as Kyle Boholano on his Facebook page, shows the M/V Filipinas Cagayan de Oro of Cokaliong Shipping preparing to dock at the port in Cagayan de Oro past 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The boat listed on its portside more than two hours after it left Cagayan de Oro for Cebu.
According to passengers who went to social media to alert authorities and seek help, many of them were thrown out of their bunk beds as rumblings were heard in the roll-on/roll-off ship’s cargo hold.
Passenger Eugene Regala posted that the boat’s skipper decided to turn back to Cagayan de Oro where all on board were told to disembark just before midnight.
As the boat was sailing back to Cagayan de Oro, all passengers were told to wear life jackets.
Cokaliong Shipping and the Philippine Coast Guard have not yet issued statements regarding the incident as of posting.
No one was reported hurt in the incident.
