MWSS to investigate yellowish water from Maynilad concession area
MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System – Regulatory Office (MWSS RO) said on Thursday it will investigate issues of water quality supplied by the Maynilad Water Services Inc. due to a surge of customer complaints.
According to the MWSS RO, customers of Maynilad said that the water coming out of their faucets had a yellowish color.
“The MWSS RO is currently investigating the issue and coordinating with Maynilad to identify the root cause of the irregularity and implement any necessary corrective actions,” MWSS RO said.
Maynilad is the water concessionaire covering the west zone of Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The MWSS RO advised customers who are experiencing water discoloration to let the water flow until it becomes clear, and use the discolored water for other uses.
“For customers who are experiencing this problem, the MWSS RO advises to let the water flow until it becomes clear. Customers may collect and store the discolored water for non-potable uses, like flushing toilets,” it said.
The agency added that it will prioritize the health and safety of the customers, and will protect consumer interest and welfare.
“Meanwhile, the MWSS RO assures affected customers that their health and safety are prioritized as the Office investigates the matter. It will remain committed to protecting consumer interest and welfare,” it added.
In an advisory by the Maynilad, the yellowish water was attributed to a higher manganese in the raw water in the Angat Dam.
“We have received reports of yellowish water supply in some portions of the West Zone today. This is due to the higher manganese in the raw water passing through the low-level outlet of Angat Dam,” Maynilad said.
“We have already adjusted chemical dosages in our treatment plants to address the yellowish discoloration in the water supply. Our field teams have also been doing flushing activities in the network. The discoloration will gradually ease over the next few hours,” Maynilad continued.
