Magnitude 6.9 earthquake strikes Banda Sea in Indonesia; no tsunami warning

MANILA, Philippines — No tsunami threat is expected in the country following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that jolted the Banda Sea in Indonesia on Wednesday, state seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometers, was detected at the Banda Sea at 12:53 p.m.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data,” Phivolcs said on its website.

“This is for information purposes only, and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it added.
