ORMOC CITY — Fire investigators are looking into reports that a defeated candidate in the last Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) burned himself to death on Wednesday, Nov. 2, in Laoang town, Northern Samar.

SFO2 Carlos Dulay, Laoang fire marshal, said on Thursday that Nonilon Giray, 73, died in a fire that hit the house of his son in Barangay Marubay, Laoang town.

The charred remains of Viray was found in the living room.

SFO1 Christopher Surio, case investigator, said persons close to Giray observed that the latter had been weary after losing the election on Oct. 30.

Giray ran but failed to get a seat in the village council.

Witnesses said Giray seldom went out of the house since he was defeated.

Staff Sergeant Elizer Diu, the town police chief, said Giray was heard telling some people that if he would not make it in the village council, he would no longer be seen in their place.

Hours before the fire, Giray was seen having a drinking spree with some of his neighbors inside a public cemetery.
