MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said shellfish in some coastal waters in Visayas and Mindanao are still positive for Paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide.
In its advisory on Friday, the BFAR said that shellfish in the following locations below are not safe to eat:
Visayas
- Coastal waters of Roxas City, Pilar, and President Roxas, in Capiz
- Sapian Bay, Capiz
- Coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City, Bohol
- Coastal waters of Gigantes Islands, Carles, Iloilo
Mindanao
- Coastal waters of San Benito, Surigao del Norte
- Lianga Bay, Surigao del Sur
- Dumanquillas Bay, Zamboanga del Sur
Except for Lianga Bay and the coastal waters of San Benito, all of the locations above have been positive for toxic red tide since September.

“All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are not safe for human consumption,” BFAR said.
It added that other seafood, such as fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs, are safe to eat if fresh and washed correctly, with their internal organs, such as gills and intestines, removed before cooking.
