Ateneo, San Beda trounce opponents
THE ATENEO BLUE Eagles and the San Beda Red Lions took care of business as they downed their respective opponents in the 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup at the Arena in San Juan City.
The UAAP champions, Blue Eagles, encountered some rough waters against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons but ultimately prevailed, 69-60, in the “Battle of Katipunan.” Meanwhile, the NCAA champions, San Beda Red Lions, crushed the University of the East Red Warriors, 91-57.
The Fighting Maroons put up a good fight against the stacked Ateneo squad as they trailed by just three, 53-50, in the final canto. But Ateneo’s firepower was just too much as Juami Tiongson hit a trey which was followed by a perimeter shot by Nico Salva that gave them an 11-point bulge with two minutes remaining.
Former UV ace, Greg Slaughter, led the onslaught with 15 points while Salva and Tonino Gonzaga scored 12 apiece for the Eagles./CORRESPONDENT JONAS PANERIO
