MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. ordered Department of National Defense (DND) employees to avoid using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered apps that create enhanced portraits.
He cited concerns about identity theft.
“All DND and AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) personnel are directed to refrain from using AI photo generator applications and practice vigilance in sharing information online,” the memorandum signed by Teodoro stated.
The defense secretary warned these AI apps pose “significant privacy and security risks.”
“This seemingly harmless and amusing Al-powered application can be maliciously used to create fake profiles that can lead to identity theft, social engineering, phishing attacks, and other malicious activities,” it said.
The memorandum is dated October 14 and was furnished to the media on Friday.
Meanwhile, AFP public affairs office chief Lieutenant Colonel Enrico Gil Ileto said armed forces also received a copy of the order on Thursday.
