Teen dies in Quezon City motorcycle mishap

A 17-year-old boy was killed Sunday morning when he was run over by a speeding bus on EDSA, Quezon City, after he and his companion fell from a motorcycle.

Police Officer 3 Andie Sotto of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Group identified the victim as Joel Monreal, a resident of Cembo in Makati City.

His companion, 18-year-old Sarah Jane Sultan, suffered cuts and bruises.

According to the traffic enforcer, the two were not wearing motorcycle helmets when the accident occurred.

Based on the police traffic report, the victims’ motorcycle skidded, causing them to fall onto the road on the northbound lane of EDSA, just in front of a mall at the corner of North Avenue.

Investigation showed that the riders fell on opposite sides of the motorcycle. Sultan fell on the right side of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries.

Monreal, however, fell on the left side of the motorcycle and onto the path of an oncoming Del Carmen bus which was traveling at a fast clip.

The enforcer said both victims were rushed to East Avenue Medical Center where Monreal was declared dead on arrival.

The bus driver, Lucio Santos, 40, was taken into police custody and would be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries and damage to property.
