MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is considering the addition of 40 new vessels to the fleet of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

At the Port of Manila during the PCG’s 122nd Anniversary on Tuesday, Marcos inspected the agency’s new vessel, which was made in Cebu.

He told the media more units like the boat would be made.

“We will eventually have 40 of them, and that will give us increased capability. This is ongoing,” the Chief Executive said in an ambush interview.

He explained that PCG has many duties and responsibilities and needs more vessels.

“Not only because we are on the frontlines and the problems now we are facing in the West Philippine Sea, but also because of the very important function they play when it comes to search and rescue, maritime incidents, even disaster assistance,” said Marcos.

During the ceremony, the President also honored PCG personnel harassed by the China Coast Guard.
