UST, Ateneo volleybelles eye second straight win

THE defending champions Ateneo and former dominators, University of Sto. Tomas, gun for their second straight win today against separate foes in the 9th Shakey’s V-League at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Eagles worked through a four-setter to subdue Far Eastern U in last week’s opener of the league’s first conference with the Loyola-based squad tipped to encounter an equally tough rival in National University which out to stay in the hunt for a quarters berth.

The Lady Bulldogs dropped a five-setter to reigning NCAA champions Perpetual Help Altas and are hard-pressed to score a win to remain in contention for a quarters berth in Group A.

The Tigresses likewise face a team raring to bounce back from a loss as they collide with the Adamson Lady Falcons in the 4 p.m. contest of what promises to be another thrilling twinbill. UST outplayed Letran in three with coach Odjie Mamon expecting a rise in competitive form from Thai import Utaiwan Kaensing and local aces Judy Caballero, Maika Ortiz, Mary Jean Balse and Maruja Banaticla.

But Adamson is exepcetd to go all out for a win with former MVP Nene Bautista, fellow guest player Angela Benting and mainstays Pau Soriano, Sheila Pineda, Faye Guevara and Angelica Quinlog expected to pour it all out to keep the team in the quarters race in Group B.   /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
