MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has warned the public against purchasing and using unauthorized merchandise bearing beep card functionalities.

According to the DOTr, there is a proliferation of charms, trinkets, keychains, bracelets, and other accessories that can alternatively be used as a stored value card (SVC).

An SVC is an electronic card that can be pre-loaded and used as a substitute for cash. In LRT1, LRT2, and MRT 3, beep cards are used for transactions.

The DOTr said that alternatives for beep cards being sold online are unauthorized.

“The use of these products as stored value cards is not considered authorized fare media on the light rail network,” the DOTr emphasized in their public advisory on Tuesday.

The department also noted that AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), the owner of the beepTM trademark and logo, is the sole and exclusive issuer of beep cards.

Only the SVC from the AFPI will be honored in rail stations, and individuals who are found in possession of the unauthorized merchandise will face penalties, the DOTr said.

“Individuals found in possession of these items will face penalties, including confiscation and blacklisting, as these form factors are considered counterfeit and infringing on intellectual property rights,” it warned.
