LUCENA CITY — A motorcycle passenger died while the driver was injured on Saturday, September 30, after their vehicle collided with a truck in Tanauan City in Batangas province.

Batangas police said in a report that Ranielle Abarcar, 31, was driving his motorcycle with Edel Mark Encarnacion, 29, as a back-rider when they crashed into an oncoming truck driven by June Borbon along the section of JP Laurel national highway in Barangay (village) Darasa at around 2 a.m.

The two motorcycle riders suffered serious injuries and were taken to a local hospital, but Encarnacion died on the way.

The report stated that the motorcycle made an early turn and tried to avoid the collision by pulling into the shoulder of the road.

However, the roadside was occupied by a parked vehicle which led to the collision.

The police did not say if the victims were wearing crash helmets for protection as mandated under the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

The police said the concerned parties are open to amicable settlement.
