Pagasa monitoring 2 LPAs, one may become typhoon
MANILA, Philippines — Two low-pressure areas (LPAs) are being monitored by the state weather bureau — one is still outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) but may develop into a typhoon.
The first LPA, which is already inside the PAR and was last seen at around 800 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon, may dissipate this Thursday, but its trough will continue to affect parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Pagasa, in its morning forecast, said the trough causes rains in Visayas and parts of Mindanao, particularly in Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao Region.
“Yung low pressure area sa loob ng PAR ay posibleng mag-dissipate within the day, kaya naman sa mga susunod na oras ay wala itong magiging direktang epekto sa ano mang bahagi ng ating bansa, bagamat itong trough ng low pressure area na ito ang siyang nagdadala ng maulap na kalangitan na may kalat-kalat na pag-ulan especially sa may bahagi ng Visayas at Mindanao,” weather specialist Patrick del Mundo reported.
(The low-pressure area inside PAR may dissipate within the day, so it will not directly affect any part of the country. However, its trough brings cloudy skies with scattered rain showers in Visayas and Mindanao.)
Meanwhile, del Mundo said the second LPA, which is still outside the PAR, may develop into a typhoon. It was reportedly last seen at 1,850 kilometers east of South Eastern Luzon.
“Itong low pressure area sa labas ng PAR ay hindi natin inaalis yung possibility na maging bagyo within the next days kaya naman patuloy natin itong babantayan at patuloy tayong magbibigay ng updates kaugnay sa low pressure area na ito,” he said.

On the other hand, Pagasa noted that Northern Palawan in Luzon is affected by the weak southwest monsoon.
“Inaasahan nating magpapatuloy pa rin yung maulap na kalangitan na may kalat-kalat na pag-ulan at pagkulog sa may Northern Palawan area, kasama na rin yung Kalayaan Island, dahil po sa epekto ng hanging habagat o southwest monsoon,” del Mundo reported.
(We expect that cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will still prevail around Northern Palawan, including Kalayaan Island, because of the effects of the southwest monsoon.)
The bureau said that the rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, may expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening.
“Possible din yung mga malalakas na pag-ulan dulot nitong mga localized thunderstorms kaya pinaghahanda pa rin yung ating mga kababayan lalo na sa hapon at sa gabi sa mga malalakas na pagbuhos ng pag-ulan,” del Mundo reminded.
(Heavy rains due to thunderstorms are possible, and everyone is advised to expect showers, especially during afternoon and evening.)
No gale warning is raised in the entire country, the weather bureau said.
